Islam S. Badreldin

Islam Badreldin received his BSc with honors (2007) and his MSc (2012) from the Systems and Biomedical Engineering Department at Cairo University. After earning his BSC, he worked as a Teaching Assistant for three graduate-level courses with the Faculty of Media Engineering and Technology at the German University in Cairo (GUC) for the Fall 2007 semester, and then for several semesters in his home department at Cairo University starting Spring 2008. Following his aspirations for better healthcare in his home country, Egypt, he co-founded a medical equipment research and development start-up, BioBusiness, that was recognized and awarded in several business plan competitions locally and regionally. At BioBusiness, he gained a lot of experience in hands-on design and development of medical devices, the business aspects of engineering design, and the working environment of entrepreneurial start-ups. Later in Spring 2011, Islam joined the Microsoft Research (MSR) Advanced Technology Labs in Cairo (ATLC) as a Research Assistant with the Multimedia Information Retrieval group. There, Islam gained further experience in applied research, including applications of Machine Learning and Computer Vision.

In Summer 2012, Islam joined the Oweiss Lab as a PhD student and a Research Assistant with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Michigan State University (MSU). In Fall 2014, he transferred with the Oweiss Lab to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Florida (UF), where he is currently working towards his PhD degree. His current research focuses on Closed-loop Neural Decoding in Brain-Machine Interfaces for Neuromotor Prostheses.
